Pakistan in touch with Iran over prisoners’ release
Islamabad, Pakistan is in touch with Iran about the release of Pakistani prisoners languishing in jails for petty crimes.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan said this while responding to question in the National Assembly seeking details about steps of the government for release of thousands of Pakistanis abroad in jails allegedly involved in different crimes.
The minister said Prime Minister Imran Khan during his official visit to Iran, also requested the authorities there to release Pakistani prisoners involved in petty cases.
He said ministries of foreign affairs and overseas Pakistanis were working on a mechanism for release of thousands of Pakistani prisoners languishing in jails abroad.
Earlier Minister for Human Rights, Dr. Shireen Mazari who was part of Prime Minister's delegation to Iran in a tweet said apart from the many critical issues raised and understanding reached during PM's visit to Iran, the PM also raised the issue of Pak prisoners in Iran numbering 134 at present.
She said Prime Minister especially sought release of 32 held for petty crimes and we should be getting good news on this very soon.
