Pakistani media give wide coverage to Iranian Army Chief of Staff visit

Islamabad, Pakistani electronic and print media in their reports have given exclusive coverage to the visit of Chief of Staff of Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri to Islamabad.

During his three-day Pakistan visit Major General Mohammad Bagheri met with Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa and held important discussions on a wide range of issues of shared interest.

He also met with President Mamnoon Hussain to discuss bilateral ties, international and regional developments.

He held separate meetings with Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, Naval Chief Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Zubair Mahmood Hayat.

Daily 'Dawn' in its report said Pakistan and Iran have pledged to further deepen their military cooperation. This was the upshot of Iranian Chief of General Staff Major Genral Mohammad Bagheri's visit to Pakistan.

It added the top Iranian commander's three-day trip is being attached great importance because bilateral military exchanges between Pakistan and Iran have been very rare due to their mutual mistrust that kept them divided till recently.

Daily 'Express Tribune' said the top military commanders of Pakistan and Iran have decided to strengthen defense and military-to-military cooperation between the two neighbors, a decision appears to be necessitated by the current regional environment.

The understanding was reached during formal talks between Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Chief of General Staff Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri here at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

The top Iranian commander, who is leading a high-powered delegation, also met President Mamnoon Hussian and Foreign Minister Hussain Haroon.

It said defense and military cooperation between Pakistan and Iran have seen considerable improvement in recent months apparently because of the current regional developments.

'Radio Pakistan' reported that President Mamnoon Hussain says Pakistan and Iran would continue efforts for dealing with cross-border challenges and defense cooperation between the two countries will further be strengthened.

He said this while talking to Chief of General Staff of Armed Forces of Iran Major General Muhammad Hossein Bagheri who called on him in Islamabad.

The President said as neighbors, both the countries are committed to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan as a stable Afghanistan is in the best interest of the region.

It said Chief of General Staff of Armed Forces of Iran Major General Mohammad Bagheri also called on Foreign Minister Abdullah Hussain Haroon.

In another report Radio Pakistan' said Pakistan Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa says enhanced Pakistan-Iran cooperation will have positive impact on peace and security in the region.

He said this while talking to Chief of General Staff Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri in Rawalpindi.

Official news agency 'APP' reported that Pakistan Foreign Minister Abdullah Hussain Haroon during a meeting with Chief of General Staff of Armed Forces of Iran Major General Mohammad Bagheri said Pakistan desired to further strengthen cooperation with Iran in areas of mutual interest for the benefit of two countries and to ensure peace and stability in the region.

During the meeting, it was noted that both countries had made useful progress in areas of trade, connectivity, cultural relations and enhancing people-to-people contacts. There was a considerable scope to enhance these relations further.

Major General Bagheri conveyed the best wishes of the Iranian leadership and people of Iran for continued prosperity and progress of Pakistan.

He thanked Pakistan for its principled stance on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Major General Bagheri also President Mamnoon Hussain and discussed bilateral ties.

Daily 'The News' reported that Chief of General Staff Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri, along with a high level delegation, visited GHQ and called on General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
