President Rouhani invited to Shanghai Summit 2018: Envoy
Beijing, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has been invited to attend China's Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit (SCO) 2018, an Iranian diplomat said on Monday.
Addressing ceremonies commemorating the 39th anniversary of the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran's Ambassador to Beijing Ali-Asghar Khaji said once the preliminary measures are taken, the visit would be put on the agenda in the upcoming months.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit will be held in the coastal city of Qingdao in East China's Shandong province in June this year.
The SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, and security organization, the creation of which was announced on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai, China by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan; the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Charter was signed in June 2002 and entered into force on 19 September 2003.
These countries, except for Uzbekistan, had been members of the Shanghai Five group, founded on 26 April 1996 in Shanghai.
India and Pakistan joined SCO as full members on 9 June 2017 at a summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.
