Quake jolts western Iran

Tehran, A quake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale shook the western Iranian border city of Mehran in Ilam Province early Monday.

According to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University the tremor took place at 1:47 hours Monday (10:17 GMT Sunday), at the depth of eight kilometers underground.

The epicenter of the quake was located at 27 km from Mehran (Ilam Province), 53 km from Alakut in Iraq and 60 km from Salahabad (Ilam Province).

No report on possible damage to life or property has been released yet.

Iran sits on major seismological fault lines, making it one of the world's most quake-prone countries.
