Russia Equips Fighter Jets on Kuznetsov Carrier with Cutting-Edge Guidance System
Russian media disclosed that the country's fighter jets on board Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrying cruiser, deployed in Syria's waters, have recently been equipped with an advanced guidance system in a move to enhance their targeting capabilities.
The Arabic service of Sputnik news agency quoted a Russian military source as saying that the warplanes onboard Kuznetsov aircraft carrier are equipped with the most modern guidance system which has given the fighter jet an ultra strength in guiding bombs and targeting enemy positions.
"A large number of Sukhoi 33 warplanes onboard Kuznetsov carrier are equipped with a unique computer system known as Gifist which allows the fighter jets to fire their unguided bombs as accurate as guided bombs at the targets," the source said.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday that the Russian Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrying cruiser began combat operations in Syria; FNA reported.
Shoigu said Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich launched missiles on terrorist targets in Syria.
"Today, we started a major operation to launch massive strikes on ISIL and al-Nusra Front (also known as Fatah al-Sham Front) targets in the Idlib and Homs provinces in Syria," Shoigu said at a meeting with the ministry's leadership and defense enterprises.
"For the first time in history of Russian Navy, Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft-carrying cruiser has begun military operations," Shoigu said.
Russian naval task force in Syria is reliably protected by Bastion Coastal Defense Missile Systems and Pantsir systems, the minister said.
On November 8, it was reported that Russian Navy's aircraft carrier group, which includes Russia's 'Admiral Kuznetsov' aircraft carrier, 'Pyotr Veliky' nuclear power guided missile cruiser and two destroyers, had completed its transfer to the Mediterranean Sea and group was getting ready to launch a strike targeting ISIL terrorists in the province of Aleppo.
On October 28th, a group of militants attempted to breach the Eastern part of the city, using tanks and infantry fighting vehicles for support. Syria's Aleppo has been the scene of fierce battles between Syria's army and militants holding the city's eastern districts.
Fighting has escalated in recent days since militants announced an offensive and fired missiles on government-held districts of western Aleppo.
Russia introduced an earlier humanitarian pause in October, to ensure the safe evacuation of civilians and unarmed militants from eastern Aleppo through designated corridors. That pause collapsed when Fatah al-Sham Front militants prevented civilians from fleeing Aleppo and attacked them, prompting an offensive by government forces.
