Solution to ME issues political: Senior Iranian official

Tehran, The solution to the issues in the region is political, and the people of the region should be given the right of self-determination, a senior Iranian official said on Wednesday.

'The sensitive region of the Middle East needs some kind of global public cooperation and protection to resolve its main issues,' Ali Akbar Velayati, Supreme Leader senior advisor and a member of Iran's Expediency Council said in a meeting with Spain's Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis in Tehran.

'We are glad that Europe in general and Spain in particular has taken a different and more positive stance towards the countries of the region,' Velayati said.

'Those who do not know the Middle East sensitivity, harm themselves more than region,' he said.

'Many years after the foreigners' intervention in the region that resulted in damage, everybody has come up with the conclusion that solution to issues in the region is political, rather than military,' Velayati said, adding that the self-determination right should be given to the people of the region and any intervention by the outsiders should be prevented.

'We all witnessed that the chaos in the Middle East affected the entire Europe, including Spain; therefor, we are ready to solve the issues peacefully and in consistence with the international law, so that peace and stability return to the region,' Velayati said.

Emphasizing the peaceful and friendly spirit of his visit to Iran, the Spanish FM at the meeting expressed hope that it would be a step toward establishing peace and stability in the region and the world.

Echoing the Iranian official's view on cooperation and exchange of thoughts with the aim of peace and stability in the world and region, he said that he agrees on finding political solutions to the issues.

The Spanish FM said that he had also a message for strengthening relations between the two countries.

Dastis arrived in Tehran on Tuesday evening to talk with Iranian officials.

Meeting with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are on the schedule of his two-day visit.
