Syrian rebels start to withdraw heavy weapons from Idlib buffer zone

Tehran, Two Turkey-backed Syrian rebel officials told Reuters that rebel groups had begun to withdraw heavy weaponry from a demilitarized zone in northwest Syria on Saturday morning.

'The process of withdrawing heavy weapons began this morning and will continue for a number of days,' one rebel official told Reuters.

For years, Syria's defeated rebels have fled to the northern territory of Idlib, which was established as a de-escalation zone guaranteed by Turkey, Russia and Iran. As the government retook areas like Aleppo and eastern Ghouta, surrendering fighters and their families were sent to Idlib under a deal negotiated by the regime's ally Russia.
