Tehran commemorates birth centenary of Nelson Mandela
Tehran,Birth centenary of Nelson Mandela was commemorated in Tehran on Wednesday in the presence of Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi, Head of UN Information Center in Iran Maria Dotsenko and South African embassy Charge d’Affaires in Iran Soraya Jacobs.
UN General Assembly in November 2009 named July 18 as International Day of Nelson Mandela to recognize former South African president’s contributions to culture of peace and freedom.
Sarmadi delivered speech in the ceremony, and said, ‘We are commemorating one of the greatest leaders of the current century who spare no effort to fight against Apartheid in South Africa and set free his people from the yoke of colonialism.
South African embassy Charge d’Affaires in Tehran Soraya Jacobs, as another speaker, said that South Africa is trying to be committed to Mandela values through commitment to the Constitution and national development.
She added that Iran supported South African liberation movements and stopped to supply its oil to the Apartheid regime.
When late Mandela came to Iran, said he is here to appreciate the Iranian government and nation for their supports for black struggles against Apartheid.
Jacobs pointed to relations between Iran and South Africa, and said her country supports Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) while expressing concern for some kind of threats in direction of the deal.
Maria Dotsenko said according to the heritage of Nelson Mandela and in honor of his helps and assistance for issues related to the UN like peace, security, human rights and sustainable development an exhibition would be held at the UN Headquarters from July 9 to September 2, 2018.
She said that Mandela spent 67 years of his life to serve humanity as lawyer, political prisoner, and peace savior.
A film was displayed about presence of late Nelson Mandela at Tehran University, when he was in Iran.
Also message of the UN Secretary General was read out on the occasion.
