Tehran has a new mayor
Tehran, Interior Minister Abdorreza Rahmani-Fazli in a decree on Wednesday appointed Seyyed Mohammad Ali Afshani as the new mayor of Tehran.
He made the appointment based on the proposal of Tehran City Council who had already voted overwhelmingly for Afshani. He secured 19 votes out of the total 22.
Afshani was elected to the mayoral post after the pro-reform Mohammad-Ali Najafi resigned earlier this year over political disagreements.
Afshani has been serving as governor general of Fars Province since 2014.
He is a former deputy minister of education and headed the Organization for Renovating, Developing and Equipping Schools.
Tehran is home to 12 million people and in dire need of efficient infrastructure, utilities, decent housing, efficient public transport and above all responsible city management.
