Trump bashing Iran deal to cause anger among JCPOA supporters: Expert
Tehran, By criticizing Iran nuclear deal at the Security Council summit, the US president will please his allies in the Middle East and anger the deal's supporters from around the world, American think tank says.
'Bashing Iran pleases US allies in the Middle East even as it angers US partners elsewhere and achieves no positive change in Iranian policies,' Barbara Slavin, a foreign policy expert affiliated with the Atlantic Council, wrote on the Interpreter website on Monday, referring to President Donald Trump's efforts to undermine the international Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
According to Slavin, of all the topics, Trump has picked Iran and as Nicki Haley, his UN ambassador has stated he intends to address Iran and its role in the Middle East.
'Trump will undoubtedly use the opportunity to excoriate the Islamic Republic, even though Iran has complied with the 2015 nuclear agreement that the rest of the world embraced,' she wrote.
'Traditionally, that means the president of the US can choose to chair a Security Council meeting if he or she desires to spotlight a particular issue,' she added.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will reportedly attend the Security Council summit, but whether Iran will send a representative remains unclear.
The summit will be held in New York on September 26.
