UN chief: Annan guiding force for good
Tehran, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has extended his condolences over the demise of his predecessor Kofi Annan, describing him as 'a guiding force for good.'
'He never stopped working to give life to values of the United Nations Charter,' Guterres said in a statement on Saturday, according to a press release by the United Nations Information Center in the Iranian capital.
'He remained someone I could always turn to for problem-solving and a path to a better world,' the UN chief said.
'He rose through the ranks to organization into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination,' he said.
Guterres went on to recollect his days in the global body under Annan's leadership.
'I was deeply honored by his trust in selecting me to serve as UN High Commissioner for Refugees under his leadership,' he said.
My heartfelt condolences to Nane Annan, their beloved family, and all who mourn the loss of this proud son of Africa who became a global champion for peace and all humanity.
'In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations,' he stressed.
Annan had always called for all parties to stay committed to Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Condemning US President Donald Trump's anti-Iran measures, he said that 'the JCPOA was a hard-won diplomatic achievement... I deeply regret President Trump's decision to withdraw, and urge all other signatories to renew their commitment to the deal and avoid a broader escalation of tensions across the Middle East.'
