UN Chief calls for digital equity for older people

Tehran, IRNA – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message on Thursday on the International Day of Older Persons called for more inclusive policies, strategies and actions to achieve digital equity for people of all ages.

Guterres said that no population could benefit more from support than older persons in a world that is increasingly becoming reliant on technology and more actions are carried out online, especially with restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Digital Equity for all Ages,” the theme of this year’s International Day of Older Persons, offers an important chance to expand opportunities across generations for the benefit of society as a whole, he added.

The Secretary-General warned that older persons have often been left more isolated during the pandemic, adding that they are also at greater risk of suffering from the rising threat of cybercrime.

He urged the world to work to strengthen the digital skills of the older persons as an important defense and means to improve their well-being.

He also said that older persons with technology skills would be better equipped to contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals which aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy health, peace and prosperity.
