Up to 6,000 aftershocks rattle Iran west in one year
Tehran, Over 6,000 aftershocks jolted Iran's western province ofKermanshah in the past one year, local official said.
Kermanshah experienced 6009 aftershocks, following the strong 7.3 quake that jolted the region on November 12, 2017 at 18:18 UTC (21:48 local time), head of the region's seismological network said.
Farhad Forouzi made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
One of the aftershocks was over 6 Richter and 13 of them were between 5 to 6 Richter, he said.
The official noted that Kermanshah witnessed 119 aftershocks between 4 to 5 Richter and 701 aftershocks between 3 to 4 Richter.
The western region experienced 5175 aftershocks with the power of less than 3 Richter, he added.
Nearly one year ago, a 7.3magnitude earthquake hit the Kermanshah Province's Ezgeleh region, killing at least 620 people and injuring over 12,000.
The earthquake damaged 10 cities and 1,930 villages of the province and about 100,000 residential units.
Iran is located on major seismic faults and experiences an earthquake a day on average.
