US accountable for disrupting narcotic confrontation

London, Secretary General of Iran's Drugs Control Headquarters said the US for sanctioning Iran is responsible for the negative consequences of disrupting international fight against illegal drugs.

Addressing the 62nd session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Eskandar Momeni said Iran fourdecade experience in fighting smugglers and having 3,811 martyrs and 12,000 veterans caused putting on the agenda comprehensive plans to fight international Mafia and the regional gangs to stop production of drugs in line with plans to reduce demands and damages.

He added that Iran has discovered about 11,000 tons illegal drugs over the last three decades.

According to UNODC reports, about 76%of the international discoveries which are related to opium and over 30% of Heroin are related to Iran, he noted.

He went on to say that Iranian bodies conducted 1,557 operations against smuggling gangs in the region and dismantling 2114 gangs have discovered about 807 tons Psychedelic drugs, including heroin and morphine.

By promoting the national regulations and improving instructions, Iran is trying to prevent crimes and to pave the way for addicted people to return to society, Momeni reiterated.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he described unilateral and cruel sanctions against any country namely Iran as illegal and illegitimate.

He noted that Iran is ready to support the antidrugs commission as the body for making decisions and policies, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as the only expert body, the trilateral conventions as elements of international antidrugs regime and the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) in facilitating access to narcotics for medical and scientific purposes.

Momeni urged the meeting to pave the grounds for cooperation and the international community's participation in fighting narcotics by respecting cultural and social beliefs of people, regional necessities and also based on the sovereignty and equality of countries.

The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs is one of the functional commissions of the United Nations Economic and Social Council and is the central drug policymaking body within the United Nations system.
