US, real leader of Venezuelan opposition: Exenvoy
Tehran, Iran's former envoy to Caracas Ahmad Sobhani told IRNA that the US President Donald Trump, his National Security Advisor John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are the actual leaders of the Venezuelan opposition, not Juan Guaido who pretends to be.
'They have disrupted the ordinary trend of life in Venezuela and do everything in their might to topple President Nicolas Maduro,' Sobhani said.
Referring to the failed coup in Venezuela, he said the protests have been going on since President Hugo Chavez took office.
'Examining the records, one can easily see that there have been numerous small and big coup attempts in Venezuela,' he said.
He added that the recent calm seen in the streets was because the US was kind of hoping that they can negotiate with the political and military officials of Venezuela to entice them and now that they have been let down, they have returned to the street protests.'
Sobhani said that only a few lowrank officials have joined Guaido; noting that the US tries to create a riot and even favors bloodshed, but many Venezuelans support Maduro.
'The existing conditions are in favor of neither the people of Venezuela nor their adjacent countries. The problem with Venezuela is not that the political currents are unwilling to negotiate but rather the root cause of the problem is vast oil resources the nation has which accounts for 21% of world oil.'
'The other issue is that things have changed; the situation is not like the past when the US issued orders and the others followed. Now people's resistance has taken a shape.'
Regarding military interventions in Venezuela, he said, 'Nothing is impossible. The US army is on alert, but if Trump is wise, he won't make such a move; that's not in US interest.'
'If the US attacks and succeeds, they should have in mind that Latin America is good at guerrilla wars and will inflict harsh blows to the US.'
