Vatican backing JCPOA: Senior Iranian official
Rome, Head of Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharrazi said on Wednesday that Vatican is supporting Iran nuclear deal also known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
He made the remarks after meetings with the country's prime minister and foreign minister during his official two-day visit to Italy.
Kharrazi discussed JCPOA-related issues with Vatican Prime Minister Cardinal Pietro Parolin on Wednesday.
Noting that he has had very good meetings with Vatican officials, Kharrazi added, The country's foreign minister voiced his support to the JCPOA, and recommended the Europeans to stay in the deal and take steps in line with Iran's interests.
Kharrazi further noted that in addition to JCPOA, he discussed Middle East developments as well as the fact that Vatican should play its part in blocking aggressions.
Vatican can play a crucial role in preventing oppressions taking place in the region including what Israel commits against the Palestinians and barbaric bombing of Yemen by Saudi Arabia and UAE, he said.
Kharrazi also discussed boosting bilateral ties and preserving JCPOA with the Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi on June 19.
He said that The European countries are making efforts to protect the Iran Deal after US May 8 unilateral withdrawal from the deal.
We have always called for firm and reliable guarantees for preserving the 2015 nuclear deal and believe that the political stance is not enough, Kharrazi noted, adding Italy, as Iran's first trade partner in Europe, endeavors to achieve this end.
He further noted that Italy as a neighbor of the Middle East has a better understanding about the region and Iran.
Kharrazi is to leave for Madrid today to hold talks with the country's new government officials.
