World Parliamentary Forum opens in Indonesia

Kuala Lumpur, World Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable Development (WPFSD) launched its meeting in Indonesia on Wednesday with participation of representatives from Iran.

The two-day forum in Bali will be attended by members of parliaments from 47 countries and representatives of some international organizations.

The topics to be discussed at the forum include sustainable development and responsible energy consumption, quality education for green industry, women role and sustainable energy, and the role of parliaments in securing inexpensive and sustainable energy.

Two Iranian representatives, MP Nour-Mohammad Torbatinejad and Ali Haji-Mohammadi, are participating in the forum on behalf of Iran.

Head of Indonesia's inter-parliamentary cooperation committee Nour Hayati said at the opening ceremony that the main responsibility of members of parliaments is to raise the public awareness on sustainable development goals.

The decisions and policies of the forum will not bear fruit without support of the countries' parliaments, she said.

In the past 100 years, fossil fuels have been the main source of energy, the Indonesian lawmaker said adding that the dominance should be ended by replacing the fuels with renewable energies.

She also highlighted the role of parliaments in advancing the UN sustainable development agenda, saying that combating poverty, injustice and inequality as well as confronting climate change are at the center of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Some 200 representatives from various countries, including India, Canada, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Portugal, Qatar, South Korea, Turkey, United Arab Emirates are participating in the forum.
