The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stressed that the Arab League believes in the importance of strengthening relations with Euro-Mediterranean countries through cooperation with the Union for the Mediterranean and the European Union to achieve more successful partnerships in the scientific and diplomatic fields. In his speech during the opening session of the high-level international conference on science diplomacy, held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League, Aboul Gheit stated, "The role of diplomacy extends and expands to inhabit new fields such as the environment, climate change, and sustainable development, all of which are domains in which the interests of countries conflict and require diplomatic skill to reach compromises that satisfy countries and serve the interests of all humanity." He added that it is no longer surprising that political interests and humanitarian goals intersect and intertwine in several areas such as global epidemic s, food security, and the preservation of biodiversity. In addition, he mentioned artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which requires constructive negotiation between countries, partners, international organizations, and scientific centers to harness this technology for the service of humanity while avoiding the risks of its uncontrolled use. Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean Nasser Kamel expressed his hope that the conference would provide fertile ground for reflection, communication, and cooperation in establishing a new vision for science diplomacy, which enhances exchanges, builds capacities, strengthens networks, and stimulates joint actions for the benefit of all.
