Agreement with U.S. ‘Within Reach’ if Enrichment Guaranteed and Sanctions Lifted: Araqchi

Muscat: Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has stated that an agreement with the United States is within reach, contingent upon Iran’s right to uranium enrichment being guaranteed and the lifting of sanctions against Tehran.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araqchi made these remarks in a post on his X account on Wednesday. This statement comes ahead of the sixth round of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington on Iran’s nuclear program, scheduled for June 15 in Muscat, Oman. The talks, mediated by Oman, have encountered challenges as the U.S. administration under President Donald Trump demands a complete halt to Iran’s uranium enrichment, which Tehran firmly opposes.

Araqchi underscored that Iran does not intend to develop nuclear weapons, suggesting this could serve as the basis for a new agreement with the United States. He noted that President Trump’s initial stance against Iran possessing nuclear weapons aligns with Iran’s own doctrine and could serve as a foundation for negotiations.

As the talks are set to resume on Sunday, Araqchi expressed optimism that an agreement ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program is close and could be reached swiftly. He further stressed that a successful negotiation outcome would depend on recognizing Iran’s right to enrichment under U.N. nuclear watchdog supervision and the effective lifting of sanctions.
