Baghdad: Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim, head of Iraq's National Wisdom Movement, has announced that memorial ceremonies will be held in Iraq to honor the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. These ceremonies will recognize him not merely as Iran's leader but as a significant religious authority for Muslims worldwide.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Al-Hakim made these comments during an interview with Iran's Al-Alam news network, highlighting the preparations for the memorial events in Iraq's holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. These ceremonies are part of a week-long service commemorating Ayatollah Khamenei, set to conclude on Thursday, July 9, with his burial at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (PBUH) in Mashhad, northeastern Iran.
Explaining the importance of the ceremonies, al-Hakim stated that Ayatollah Khamenei's remains would be brought to Iraq not just in his role as a national leader, but as one of the Muslim world's marjas, or sources of emulation. Al-Hakim emphasized the deep cultural, religious, and historical ties between Iraq and Iran, noting the spontaneous public mourning in Iraq following the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei.
Al-Hakim also praised Ayatollah Khamenei's "comprehensive personality," highlighting his multifaceted character that spanned scholarly, intellectual, social, cultural, and security dimensions. The Iraqi cleric noted the martyred Leader's consistent adherence to fundamental principles throughout his leadership of the Muslim Ummah over more than three decades.
The Iraqi politician noted Ayatollah Khamenei's deep understanding of Iraq, which informed Iran's support for the country even under challenging circumstances. He pointed out Iran's recognition of the Iraqi Governing Council following the US-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein as a testament to Ayatollah Khamenei's commitment to empowering the Iraqi people.
Al-Hakim also mentioned Iran's critical role, under Ayatollah Khamenei's leadership, in helping Iraq defeat Daesh terrorists in 2014. He acknowledged the efforts of Martyr General Qassem Soleimani, who, under Ayatollah Khamenei's orders, extended full support to Iraq during its time of need.
The martyred Leader's impact extended beyond Iran, with his leadership championing issues that transcended national borders and included oppressed non-Muslim peoples, according to the Iraqi politician.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei was assassinated in an airstrike on his office and residence in Tehran on February 28, marking the beginning of the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran. The week-long memorial service commenced in Tehran on July 3, 2026, with senior officials from numerous countries paying their respects.
