Tehran: Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, convened on Thursday to deliberate on a proposed framework aimed at establishing a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting underscored the significant role of regional and neighboring countries in efforts to de-escalate tensions.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi attributed the prevailing regional situation to what he described as military aggression by the US and Israel. He further criticized the continuation of US interventionist actions, particularly its naval blockade and what he termed as economic terrorism against Iran. The discussions between the two officials also covered the latest regional developments and the measures being undertaken to reduce escalation, foster dialogue, and enhance regional security and stability.

Sheikh Mohammed, who serves as both prime minister and foreign minister of Qatar, also held separate meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Ghalibaf, as reported by Iran's Tasnim news agency, stressed the necessity for de-escalating regional tensions. He and Sheikh Mohammed exchanged perspectives on current regional developments and the creation of suitable conditions for resuming dialogue.

Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Qatar's stance that dialogue and diplomatic solutions are the most effective means for resolving disputes and overcoming crises. In a post on X, he highlighted that his discussions in Tehran reaffirm Qatar's commitment to de-escalating tensions and promoting peaceful solutions. He also emphasized the importance of respecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, in alignment with international law.
