Araghchi Criticizes Trump’s Diplomatic Approach and Warns Against Military Aggression

Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that 'nice words' from the new US administration will not suffice to gain Tehran's trust for negotiating a new agreement. In an interview with Sky News, Araghchi referenced the US's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal during Donald Trump's previous tenure, emphasizing that significant efforts are required from the US to rebuild confidence.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, in May 2018, the US unilaterally exited the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and adopted a 'maximum pressure' strategy against Iran. This withdrawal occurred despite the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) repeated confirmations of Iran's compliance with the deal, leading Tehran to expand its civilian nuclear activities, which were previously restricted by the agreement. Trump has expressed a desire for a diplomatic resolution, suggesting that a new deal with Iran would be 'nice.' However, Araghchi remarked, "The situation is different and much more difficult than the previous time. We haven't heard anything but the 'nice' word, and this is obviously not enough."

The foreign minister further cautioned that any military action on Iran's nuclear facilities by Israel or the US would be met with a swift and decisive response. Araghchi stated, "We have made it clear that any attack on our nuclear facilities would be faced with an immediate and decisive response. But I don't think they will do that crazy thing. This is really crazy. And this would turn the whole region into a very bad disaster."

Araghchi also criticized Trump's controversial call for the removal of Palestinians from Gaza, which has drawn widespread condemnation. He sarcastically suggested, "Instead of Palestinians, try to expel Israelis, take them to Greenland so they can kill two birds with one stone."
