Araghchi Vows Iran’s Response to E3’s ‘Illegal’ UNSC Sanctions Move

Tehran: Iran's Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has declared that the nation will respond to what he describes as the European Troika's 'unlawful and unjustified' decision to reinstate UN Security Council sanctions. Araghchi emphasized that Iran has acted responsibly and will defend its national rights and interests accordingly.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi conveyed these sentiments during a phone conversation with the foreign ministers of France, Britain, and Germany, as well as the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs. During the discussion, the European officials informed Araghchi of their plan to formally notify the UN Security Council about triggering the dispute resolution mechanism, known as the snapback mechanism, under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). They also expressed their willingness to pursue a diplomatic solution within the next 30 days to prevent the reimposition of UN sanctions.

Araghchi criticized the move by the three European countries as lacking any legal foundation and reiterated Iran's commitment to defending its legitimate rights under international law and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He urged the European nations to adopt a responsible approach, recognize current realities, and correct their course of action in the coming days.

On Tuesday, Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Ministry is actively seeking diplomatic solutions to block the activation of the snapback mechanism by the European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal. Addressing concerns raised by IRNA's correspondent, Baghaei asserted that the European parties lack the legal and moral authority to take such actions and confirmed Iran's vigilant stance on the potential consequences of this move.
