The Indian government on Saturday announced that around 1,000 students have returned from Bangladesh as the neighbouring country is witnessing unprecedented student protests against a controversial law regarding filling government employment. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that a total of 978 students have already returned to India following the recent developments in Bangladesh. "The High Commission of India in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Khulna have been assisting the return of Indian nationals home following the recent developments in Bangladesh," the ministry said. It added that the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh is taking measures in coordination with the local authorities to facilitate safe travel to crossing points along the India Bangladesh International Border. The ministry is also in touch with civil aviation, Border Security Forces immigration, land ports to facilitate safe return of Indians stranded in Banglade sh. "Thus far, 778 Indian students have returned to India through various land ports. In addition, around 200 students have returned home by regular flight services through Dhaka and Chittagong airports," the ministry said, adding that authorities are in touch with more than 4,000 students studying in various universities in the neighboring country. Indian authorities also arranged in coordination with Bangladesh authorities security escorts for the safe travel of Indians. Bangladesh is witnessing bloody clashes following student protests against a new government job quota system leading to the death of more than 100 people and injuring as many from students and security men. In wake of the bloody protests, the government deployed massive military and police forces, suspended internet, imposed curfew and banned public gatherings. Source: Kuwait News Agency
