Tehran: The commemoration ceremony for Abdollah Movahed, a celebrated wrestler with a legacy of six gold medals in world and Olympic competitions, took place at Noor Mosque in Fatemi Square on May 12, 2026. Movahed passed away at the age of 86 in Virginia, USA, due to a heart attack.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the event was attended by prominent figures from the sports community. Mahmoud Khosravi Vafa, the head of the National Olympic Committee, and Mohammad Reza Taleghani, the former head of Iran's Wrestling Federation, were present to pay their respects. In addition, esteemed sports figures such as Mohammad Dadkan, Mansour Barzegar, Ebrahim Javadi, Ali Akbar Heydari, and Abbas Jadidi attended the ceremony.
The gathering also saw the participation of Alireza Dabir, Abdolmahdi Nasirzadeh, vice president of the Wrestling Federation, and Ghasem Ali Askari. The event served as a solemn tribute to Movahed's remarkable contributions to wrestling and his enduring influence on future generations of athletes.
