Brussels: At the EU-Southern Neighbourhood Ministerial, High Representative Kaja Kallas emphasized the historic nature of the event with the participation of Israel, Palestine, and Syria for the first time in 11 years. The discussions are set to focus on key issues such as Mediterranean security, economic cooperation, and the regional situation, with a particular focus on Gaza.
According to European Union, Kallas highlighted the agreement reached with Israel on providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, stressing the importance of implementing the agreement effectively. Despite the agreement, there is a pressing need for tangible improvements on the ground, as the situation remains dire for Gazans.
In anticipation of the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Kallas noted that the options for action are to be discussed by EU Member States. The priority remains improvement of conditions on the ground, urging that agreement on paper translates into real, positive change for affected populations.
Addressing recent developments involving former President Trump, Kallas acknowledged the stance on Russia and the provision of new weapons for Ukraine. She welcomed the move but emphasized the urgency required in addressing the ongoing conflict, noting that increased pressure on Russia is crucial for achieving peace.
