Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has condemned the European Union's (EU) reported plans to impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), accusing the EU of using unfounded pretexts related to the war in Ukraine. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi expressed his criticism in a post on his X account late on Sunday, where he stated that the EU is replicating the baseless reasons it previously used to target Iran's national airline. He emphasized that even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed there have been no deliveries of Iranian missiles to Russia for use in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Araghchi further argued that the EU's alleged actions against IRISL lack any legal, logical, or moral justification. He highlighted that the EU is now targeting Iran's shipping lines with the same non-existent missile pretext, underscoring the absence of any credible basis for such measures. The Iranian Foreign Minister also warned that the EU's plan to impose sanctions on IRISL contradicts the principle of freedom of navigation, a fundamental aspect of the law of the sea. He cautioned that these actions could potentially backfire on the EU. The US-based Wall Street Journal had earlier reported on Saturday that the EU was set to announce sanctions on Iran's shipping industry on Monday.
