Vienna: Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi has criticized the attempt of some western countries to push for an anti-Iran resolution at the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (I.A.E.A.), saying the sponsors of the draft cannot claim to support diplomacy.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Takht-e-Ravanchi stated in an interview that Iran’s response to any resolution will be technical-political, which the country will announce in due course. He emphasized that the countries behind such actions cannot claim they support diplomacy, describing the planned anti-Iranian move as an unfounded allegation.
The official further criticized the three European countries-France, Britain, and Germany-for allegedly misusing a specialized agency of the United Nations by reopening an issue that was closed over two decades ago. Takht-e-Ravanchi insisted that Iran cannot remain indifferent to this political misuse and vowed that the country will t
ake its own action in response.
He also mentioned that the issue related to Possible Military Dimensions (P.M.D.) of Iran’s nuclear program was resolved with a resolution by the I.A.E.A.’s Board of Governors. He accused the West of reopening the matter to advance specific agendas. Takht-e-Ravanchi referred to the potential activation of the snapback mechanism under the J.C.P.O.A., accusing them of using the I.A.E.A. platform to re-impose U.N. sanctions lifted under the 2015 deal.
While discussing the ongoing talks, including those between Iran and the United States, Takht-e-Ravanchi highlighted the contradiction in their approach, as they claim to support the talks but use the Agency against Iran to fulfill their objectives. He asserted that Iran’s nuclear program is transparent, and they are open to discussing it with anyone.
Takht-e-Ravanchi also addressed the indirect Iran-U.S. talks mediated by Oman, asserting that despite challenges, the negotiations are not deadlocked. He acknowledged the inherent up
s and downs in international negotiations and noted that patience is required for these talks to reach a conclusion.
Reflecting on prior negotiations, he remarked that both Iranian and American delegations have navigated difficult stages, and as negotiations progress, they are likely to encounter further challenges. He also mentioned that Iran is preparing a response to a written U.S. proposal delivered by the Omani foreign minister, which will be conveyed to the Americans through Oman once completed.
