Tehran: The Expediency Council has given its approval for Iran to join the Convention on Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) after a comprehensive review of the bill, which was previously approved by the Parliament. This development marks a significant step in Iran’s legislative process regarding international financial regulations.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Mohsen Dehnavi, the spokesperson for the council, announced the decision on his official X account. He stated that the council agreed to Iran’s conditional accession to the CFT Convention following detailed discussions in today’s meeting. This decision comes after four rounds of meetings and a thorough review by the Joint Commission.
The CFT aims to investigate, analyze, deter, and prevent the financial sources that fund terrorist activities. It is part of four significant bills related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The FATF framework includes 42 agreements, 40 of which have already been implemented in Iran in recent years. These implementations followed parliamentary approval and subsequent confirmation by both the Guardian Council and the Expediency Council.
