Accra:Strait of Hormuz An explosion occurred aboard a second supertanker after it collided with a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy. The incident has left the vessel, which was carrying over 2 million barrels of crude oil, immobilized after the fire engulfed its engine room.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the IRGC's Public Relations office provided a statement on Saturday detailing the explosion but did not include information about the vessel, its crew, potential casualties, or environmental impact.
The IRGC Navy noted that the tanker had disabled its positioning and radar systems while attempting to navigate an 'unauthorized' route in the Strait of Hormuz. This incident follows a similar occurrence involving another supertanker that took the same route, despite ongoing warnings to adhere to authorized passages in coordination with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
The IRGC accuses the US military of heightening maritime tensions by misleading shipping and insurance companies, compelling them to traverse unauthorized routes, thereby complicating the management of the Strait of Hormuz.
