Brussels: The Foreign Affairs Council convened to address the escalating Russian aggression against Ukraine, following a critical intervention by Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha. Joining European Union ministers in person, Sybiha provided updates on the diplomatic landscape, the situation on the ground, and Ukraine's most pressing priorities. The council's discussions underscored the urgent need for a ceasefire amidst increasing Russian attacks, highlighted by recent casualties in Kyiv.
According to European Union, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, emphasized the council's unified support for a ceasefire while acknowledging the intensifying nature of Russian hostilities. Kallas also addressed the complexities of the EU's relationship with China, noting its role in supporting Russia's actions and engaging in activities that challenge the EU's democratic integrity. She pointed to China's involvement in cyberattacks and coercive trade practices as significant strains on the relationship.
The council's agenda also included discussions on the situation in the Middle East and Libya, beginning with an informal breakfast focusing on recent developments in Iran. EU ministers reiterated their call for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions, affirming the EU stance that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons. In the context of Gaza, Kallas outlined the EU's priorities, which include reinstating a full ceasefire, ensuring humanitarian access, and securing the release of hostages. She communicated her outreach efforts with Israeli authorities, stressing the necessity of lifting blockades on essential supplies. The council also examined Israel's adherence to the EU-Israel Association Agreement, initiating a debate aimed at improving humanitarian conditions on the ground.
