Brussels: High Representative Kaja Kallas addressed the media upon arrival at the Foreign Affairs Council, emphasizing the Council's dedication to pursuing diplomatic solutions amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East. The ministers are particularly concerned about potential retaliation and the dangerous implications of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz.
According to European Union, the discussions also encompassed broader Middle Eastern issues, including the situation in Gaza and the Association Agreement with Israel, which has been reviewed and is ready for further discussion among Member States. While attention is largely focused on Iran and the Middle East, the Council remains deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where Russian attacks continue to cause loss of life in Kyiv.
Kallas highlighted the European Union's commitment to diplomacy, noting recent discussions with the Iranian minister, who showed openness to addressing nuclear and security issues. She stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue, as Europe has a significant role to play, particularly with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) deadlines approaching.
Regarding Georgia, Kallas acknowledged the worsening situation and mentioned the potential for sanctions against those responsible for violence and human rights violations. While visa measures are not on the immediate agenda, they remain a possible tool.
On the topic of the Association Agreement with Israel, Kallas confirmed that the Article 2 review and Israel's responses are under consideration. The Council is set to discuss potential actions and further steps to ensure compliance with the agreement.
