Former Protest Leader Mehdi Karoubi’s House Arrest Lifted: Son

Tehran: Mehdi Karoubi, a prominent protest leader during the post-election unrest in Iran in 2009, is no longer under house arrest, his son has informed IRNA. Hossein Karoubi revealed that security personnel communicated to his father that they would remain at his residence for security reasons until April 9.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Hossein Karoubi stated that the Judiciary chief had informed a well-known political figure that a Security Council resolution had been received to lift the elder Karoubi's house arrest. Hossein further mentioned that his father was instructed to notify the security personnel a day in advance if he wished to go anywhere until April 9. After this date, no further coordination would be necessary.

Hossein emphasized that, as per the security personnel, there would be no restrictions on his father following April 9. The unrest in Iran had erupted after allegations of vote-rigging by two rivals of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Mehdi Karoubi and Mirhossein Mousavi accused Ahmadinejad of winning the election through fraudulent means, which the authorities strongly denied as unfounded.
