G7 Summit in Canada Disrupted by Middle East Conflict and Trump’s Early Exit

Alberta: The G7 summit in Canada, hosted for the first time by Prime Minister Mark Carney, faced unexpected challenges as the agenda was overshadowed by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and an early departure by US President Donald Trump. Still, Carney expressed optimism, suggesting the summit could mark the beginning of a new era of cooperation focusing on long-term resilience.

According to BBC, the summit’s agenda, which was initially well-structured, had to be adjusted due to the unforeseen developments in the Middle East. The conflict between Israel and Iran dominated discussions, overshadowing other planned topics. Despite President Trump’s abrupt exit, which he attributed to the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, the summit continued with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stepping in to represent the US. Leaders at the summit, including French President Emmanuel Macron, downplayed the impact of Trump’s departure, emphasizing the importance of maintaining unity.

The conflict in the Middle East took center stage, with G7 leaders striving to find common ground on their response to the tensions. The group eventually released a communique urging a de-escalation of hostilities in the region, though it fell short of calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. The back-and-forth between Trump and Macron highlighted differing views on the US’s role in seeking a resolution. However, the statement ultimately served as a symbol of unity among the G7 nations.

In terms of other international issues, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left the summit with new aid from Canada, although no joint statement of support was issued. Reports suggested that Canada’s plans for a strong statement on the Ukraine conflict were dropped due to US resistance. Meanwhile, Canadian-Indian relations were a point of contention at the summit, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance causing friction among Sikh Canadians. Despite this, Carney announced that India and Canada agreed to restore diplomatic services following recent tensions.

The summit also provided Carney the opportunity to pitch trade deals with other world leaders. A notable moment was a discussion between Carney and Trump regarding a potential trade and security deal to resolve the ongoing tariffs war between their countries. While differences remain, both leaders expressed a commitment to pursuing negotiations within the next 30 days. Carney also aimed to diversify Canada’s economic partnerships, reducing reliance on the US and exploring agreements with European nations.

For President Trump, trade deals were a primary focus at the summit. Although a deal with Canada was not finalized, Trump and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer successfully implemented parts of a tariff agreement. Trump faced pressure to meet his self-imposed deadline for new trade deals, particularly as discussions with Japan and the European Union continued.

Overall, the G7 summit in Canada was marked by unexpected disruptions and diplomatic challenges, but it also highlighted opportunities for international cooperation and dialogue on pressing global issues.
