The Giza Pyramids and the Great Sphinx on Friday 27/9/2024 were illuminated for two hours to mark the World Tourism Day, which is celebrated annually on September 27. Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mohamed Ismail Khalid said that lighting up the pyramids for two hours came in light of Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathi's directives to serve as a message of peace to the world from the Giza Plateau, the site of the three world-famous Pyramids of Giza, which are one of the oldest seven wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The UN has declared that 2024's World Tourism Day focuses on "Tourism and Peace," highlighting the connection between tourism and global peace. It also highlights the importance of promoting sustainable tourism and understanding other cultures. The UNWTO established the World Tourism Day in 1980 to honor the global influence of travel and to increase public understanding of its importance on social, cultural, and economic development.
