Group of Friends in Defense of UN Charter Condemns EU’s Anti-Iran Move

Brussels: The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations has condemned the recent move by the European Union (EU) against the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC). In a statement released on Wednesday, the Group expressed strong disapproval of the EU's actions, which involved making accusations against Iran and its armed forces, specifically the IRGC, established under its constitution.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations denounced the EU's act of leveling allegations against Iran and its constitutionally established armed forces. The Member States of the Group categorically rejected such politically-motivated approaches, stating that these measures adopted by the EU on January 30, 2025, against a part of the armed forces of a sovereign State represent a violation of the principles of international law, including sovereign equality and non-intervention in the internal affairs of States, contravening the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

The Group emphasized that States, as equals, may not exercise jurisdiction over one another and should not subject the constitutionally established armed forces of another sovereign State to unlawful measures, such as attributing unfounded 'terrorist' labels or coercive measures. These acts set a dangerous precedent and undermine counter-terrorism efforts, ultimately serving the interests of terrorist groups and counteracting the obligations assumed by States in fighting terrorism.

The Member States of the Group acknowledged Iran and its armed forces, particularly the IRGC, for their efforts in countering and preventing terrorism in the region, including the fight against ISIS/Daesh. They reaffirmed their solidarity with the People and Government of Iran, a founding member of the group. The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations includes 17 countries, such as Iran, Russia, China, Algeria, Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine, Nicaragua, Uganda, Belarus, Bolivia, and Zimbabwe, among others.
