Houthi Attacks Escalate Tensions in Yemen’s Oil-Rich Marib Province

Marib: Houthi attacks in Yemen's Marib province have resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals, according to a minister and military source, as the rebels intensify their offensive on the oil-rich region. This escalation comes after the deadliest attack in years and threatens to disrupt the fragile truce established in 2022 between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed government.

According to France24.com, a Yemeni military source disclosed that the recent attacks in Marib province led to the deaths of eight government forces with 12 others injured. The Saudi-backed government's health minister reported that the rebels targeted residential areas and displacement camps in Marib city, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuring 14 others.

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for an attack on a government-held military camp in Marib province. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree stated that the camp, held by government forces, was targeted with numerous missiles and drones. Health Minister Qasim Buhaibeh confirmed on social media that the shelling by the Houthi militia led to civilian casualties and injuries of varying severity.

A source close to the Saudi military emphasized that the coalition supporting the Yemeni government would not remain passive as the Houthis increase their attacks. The source highlighted Marib as a "red line" and warned against any changes in the current balance of power, indicating a potential escalation in military responses if the situation persists.

The strategic Marib province, divided between Houthi control and the Yemeni government, remains a focal point due to its oil fields and facilities. The 2022 truce, which had momentarily halted the fighting, seems to be unraveling as tensions rise, drawing regional powers into the conflict. The recent offensive suggests an ongoing effort by the Houthis to assert control over the energy-rich region.

The renewed violence in Yemen underscores the challenges of maintaining peace in a nation embroiled in over a decade of conflict, further complicated by geopolitical tensions involving the US and Iran. The situation remains volatile as both sides prepare for potential escalations in the coming days.
