Tehran: Iran and Iraq commenced direct peace negotiations in Geneva in early September 1988, following Iran's acceptance of UN Security Council Resolution 598 and the establishment of a ceasefire on August 20, 1988.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the Iranian delegation was led by then-Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, while the Iraqi delegation was headed by Tariq Aziz. The talks were mediated by UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar.

The negotiations continued over the subsequent weeks and months, initially in Geneva and later relocating to New York. The photographs documenting these historic talks, previously unpublished, were captured by Majid Karimian, IRNA's correspondent in Geneva, and are being released for the first time from the agency's archive.
