Geneva: Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has declared that Iran's right to utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is fundamental and non-negotiable during a speech at the United Nations Plenary Meeting of the Conference on Disarmament.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi emphasized that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) explicitly acknowledges the inalienable right of all States Parties to develop, research, produce, and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. He asserted that this right is inherent, legally binding, and cannot be subject to political conditions, nor can it be suspended or arbitrarily reinterpreted.

Araghchi addressed the growing global concerns over nuclear weapons, highlighting the instability in international peace and security. He pointed to the erosion of multilateralism and the renewed reliance on nuclear arsenals as policy instruments, which he argued pose existential risks to humanity. Araghchi reiterated Iran's stance against the development of nuclear weapons, citing both its defensive policy and religious prohibitions against weapons of mass destruction.

He also criticized the United States' withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the imposition of sanctions on Iran, labeling these actions as violations of international commitments. Araghchi condemned military aggression against Iran, stressing the need for respect for international law and the UN Charter.

In his speech, Araghchi called for immediate action to address nuclear threats and urged for the commencement of negotiations on a comprehensive nuclear weapons convention. He underscored Iran's willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure transparency and cooperation regarding its nuclear program.

Amidst ongoing negotiations with the United States, Araghchi expressed hope for a sustainable agreement that recognizes Iran's legitimate rights and contributes to regional stability. He concluded by emphasizing the urgency of dismantling nuclear weapons to prevent future conflicts and safeguard global peace.
