Iran Calls for Afghan-Led Future, Rejects External Solutions for Afghanistan

New york: Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, emphasized that the future of Afghanistan must be determined by Afghans themselves and should belong to them, asserting that any externally imposed solution is neither sustainable nor acceptable. Addressing a UN session in New York, Iravani highlighted the importance of engaging with Afghanistan's current authorities, viewing them as a reality on the ground.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani expressed Iran's solidarity with Afghanistan following a devastating earthquake and reiterated Iran's commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected population. He acknowledged the importance of peace, stability, and development in Afghanistan, noting its direct impact on Iran's national security and regional stability.

Iravani stressed that Afghanistan's future should be Afghan-led and Afghan-owned, emerging from an inclusive political process that respects the country's sovereignty and guarantees the rights of all Afghans, particularly women and girls. He urged the international community to engage constructively with Afghanistan's de facto authorities to address ongoing humanitarian and economic crises. Iravani also called for the unconditional release of Afghan assets frozen abroad and cautioned against politicizing humanitarian assistance and sanctions.

Highlighting Iran's burden of hosting millions of Afghan refugees, Iravani noted the significant strain on Iran's resources and infrastructure, exacerbated by regional tensions. He stated that Iran has engaged with Afghan authorities to ensure the safe and dignified return of illegal Afghan residents to their homeland.

Iravani reaffirmed Iran's support for a stable, independent Afghanistan free from terrorism, conflict, and narcotics. He called for comprehensive measures to eradicate terrorism and prevent the use of Afghan territory against its neighbors. Additionally, he underscored the crucial role of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in addressing the country's challenges and reaffirmed Iran's support for its mandate.
