Tehran: Iran's Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, has urged all countries to denounce the extraterritorial application of unilateral coercive measures by the United States. Darzi emphasized that these measures aim to compel Member States to subordinate their sovereign rights to the policies of another state, during his address to the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on 'The Security Council's Role in Mitigating Global and Local Food Crises'.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Darzi's statement highlighted the need for the Security Council to condemn and reject unilateral coercive measures designed to alter the lawful economic interests and foreign relations of sovereign states. He emphasized that armed conflict remains a significant driver of hunger and food insecurity, which cannot be addressed without confronting its root causes, such as aggression and unlawful coercive measures.
Darzi condemned Israel's actions in Gaza, describing them as grave violations of international humanitarian law, including the targeting of civilians and the weaponization of hunger. He criticized the Security Council for failing to uphold its responsibilities due to political protection and obstruction by the United States.
Darzi also addressed the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, attributing instability to the US-Israeli regime's aggression against Iran. He noted that the United States and Israel's war of aggression against Iran began on 28 February 2026, with significant consequences for regional and international peace. Darzi detailed the violations, including the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader and the deaths of over 3,400 civilians.
Darzi called on states facilitating unlawful military actions to bear responsibility under international law. He criticized the US maritime blockade of Iran and its attacks on Iranian commercial vessels as violations of Iran's sovereignty and international law. He condemned the US's 'Operation Economic Outcast', which aims to impose an economic blockade on Iran.
Emphasizing the importance of upholding international law, Darzi urged the Security Council to reject unilateral coercive measures. He reaffirmed Iran's right to pursue accountability and reparation for unlawful acts and emphasized Iran's inherent right of self-defense.
Darzi concluded by asserting Iran's measures are lawful and defensive, emphasizing the need for respecting Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He rejected allegations against Iran regarding disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, urging a focus on the root causes of the crisis.
