Vienna: Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna has issued a strong rebuke following the passage of a US- and European-backed resolution against Tehran at the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the resolution, introduced by the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, was approved on Wednesday with 21 votes in favor, 10 abstentions, and 3 votes against. It calls on Iran to inform the IAEA about the fate of bombed nuclear facilities and the enriched uranium they contained.

In a message posted on its X account shortly after the vote, the Iranian mission questioned the legitimacy of the vote and the integrity of the IAEA itself, vowing that Tehran will defend its rights in response to 'this flawed resolution.' The mission stated that the Board of Governors adopted, with a shaky vote, another political resolution on Iran's peaceful nuclear activities, lacking the professionalism expected from a technical body.

The Iranian mission censured the IAEA's inaction over repeated military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. It questioned how the IAEA can be trusted when it is seen as being used by warmongers and unable to express concern over unlawful armed attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities in Iran.

The mission further accused the resolution's backers of hypocrisy, emphasizing that a diplomatic solution requires good faith. It noted that the United States continues its acts of aggression against Iran's civilian infrastructure, even as the resolution purported to support diplomacy.

The resolution's approval came despite Iran's warning against the misuse of the Board of Governors to legitimize what it sees as illegal actions by the West. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had urged member states before the vote to approach the issue with vigilance, impartiality, and responsibility, cautioning against allowing the IAEA to become a political tool of the United States.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran, Russia, and China issued a joint statement urging all members to carefully consider the implications of the draft resolution and refrain from supporting what they described as a politically-motivated, untimely, and unconstructive move. The statement warned that the US-E3 action risks further weakening cooperation between the IAEA and Tehran, as well as jeopardizing ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring peace to the region.
