Tehran: Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna has criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) expectation of normal safeguards implementation amid continued US and Israeli threats and aggression. In an explanatory note submitted Wednesday, responding to the latest report by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Iran's mission argued that demands for routine implementation of safeguards are unreasonable given the ongoing threats and hostilities the country faces.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the note highlighted that the IAEA has previously suspended verification activities and withdrawn inspectors from Iran due to prevailing conditions. It criticized the Director General's report for not mentioning the aggression against Iran's nuclear facilities. Iran contended that the obstacles to safeguards implementation are due to unlawful actions by the United States and Israel, and that Tehran bears no responsibility for these impediments. Furthermore, the mission rejected the legal basis for any claims related to the revival of terminated UN Security Council resolutions.

The Iranian mission urged the Director General and the IAEA Board of Governors to abandon political approaches, return to their legal mandates, and explicitly condemn attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities operating under safeguards. Iran reiterated its commitment to its safeguards obligations and expressed readiness to facilitate verification activities once all threats and hostilities are permanently resolved.

During the meeting, Iranian envoy Reza Najafi to the IAEA strongly denounced the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and IAEA for ignoring US-Israeli aggression. Najafi criticized the West for lamenting nuclear proliferation while failing to denounce US-Zionist aggression. He stated that the IAEA not only fails to condemn aggression on Iran but also omits explicit references to such aggression in its resolutions.
