Tehran: Iran, Russia, and China met on Tuesday to discuss Tehran’s nuclear program and the potential reimposition of sanctions under the United Nations snapback mechanism, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated.
According to France24.com, Britain, France, and Germany, collectively known as the E3, have issued a warning that they would activate the mechanism to reimpose international sanctions on Iran if there is no progress on nuclear discussions by the end of August. The meeting between Iran, Russia, and China, which will take place in Tehran, involves the foreign ministry director generals of the respective countries.
On Monday, a meeting in Moscow saw Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and his Iranian counterpart, Aziz Nasirzadeh, discuss strengthening military cooperation, as reported by Russian state news agency RIA, citing the Iranian ambassador. This meeting is part of Iran’s broader strategy to coordinate with allies to prevent or mitigate the consequences of the snapback mechanism.
Iranian officials have dismissed the E3’s ability to invoke the snapback mechanism legally, suggesting a lack of standing. Additionally, on Sunday, Ali Larijani, acting as a presidential envoy, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, highlighting Iran’s efforts to navigate international pressures.
