Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has emphasized the longstanding commitment of the Islamic Republic to the global nonproliferation regime, describing it as clear. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi expressed on his X account that it is audacious for others to suggest that Iranians must explicitly renounce the pursuit of nuclear weapons. He reminded that Iran was a founding member of the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT), having signed it in 1968. Araghchi highlighted the religious edict issued by Iran's Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, which outlaws all weapons of mass destruction. This, he noted, is a further testament to Iran's commitment to nonproliferation. He also referenced the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement, which subjected Iran to the most extensive inspection regime ever implemented by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The agreement explicitly states that Iran will not seek, develop, or acq uire nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
