Tehran: An Iranian government official has announced that the administration of President Masoud Pezeshkian is taking steps to reform the country's hijab law. This development marks a significant move as the government seeks to address societal tensions and promote national unity. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Mohammad Mehdi Tabatabai, the deputy director of communication and information of the President's Office, stated on Sunday that the government has devised 'logical pathways' to amend what he termed as 'bad laws.' Highlighting the importance of good governance, Tabatabai emphasized the need to avoid implementing laws that contradict the country's overall interests and cause societal division. This announcement follows comments from Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian Parliament, who underscored that the issue of hijab is governed by law. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Qalibaf revealed that the new legislation on hijab, set to be announced on December 13, will include ad ditional provisions introduced by the government. He assured that while penalties will be imposed for violations, efforts have been made to prevent direct confrontations. President Pezeshkian had campaigned on a platform aimed at promoting social freedoms and fostering national unity in Iran, reflecting the current administration's commitment to reforming existing laws in line with these goals.
