Tehran: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has issued a stern warning to the European signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal, cautioning them against activating the so-called snapback mechanism that would re-impose U.N. sanctions on Iran.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei, speaking at a weekly press conference in Tehran, described the European threat as ‘a political act and in opposition to the Islamic Republic, which will naturally be met with a proportionate and appropriate response.’ He argued that the mechanism in the Iran deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (J.C.P.O.A.), is irrelevant following recent Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The spokesperson criticized the European parties for using the mechanism as a tool in violation of their fundamental obligations, despite its inclusion in the U.N. Security Council’s Resolution 2231, which endorses the J.C.P.O.A.
Baqaei emphasized that while Iran has remained committed to the J.C.P.O.A., it was compelled to gradually reduce its commitments due to violations by the United States and European parties. He stressed that the Iranian nation has resisted multi-layered sanctions imposed by the United States in recent years by relying on its internal strength and maintaining its rights and interests.
In response to queries about potential negotiations with the United States, Baqaei stated that any talks should not be held under ‘deception.’ He underscored Tehran’s commitment to diplomacy, emphasizing that Iran entered negotiations with good faith but faced military aggression from Israel, coordinated with the United States, before the sixth round. Baqaei asserted that Iran will only engage in negotiations when assured of the effectiveness of diplomacy.
Baqaei also praised the positive stance of Russia and China, acknowledging their readiness to help resolve the Iranian nuclear issue. He mentioned that both nations, as permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, have maintained strategic partnerships and consultations with Iran within the J.C.P.O.A. framework.
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Baqaei condemned the Israeli regime for its crimes and aggression, attributing the continuation of such acts to the impunity it enjoys. He called on all governments and international organizations to act against what he described as ‘an unprecedented genocide in Gaza,’ holding the United States accountable as the largest supporter of the Zionist regime.
Baqaei criticized the selective approach of international institutions, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (I.A.E.A.), in dealing with Iran’s nuclear program. He pointed out Germany’s violation of its commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by hosting U.S. nuclear weapons, highlighting it as a breach of international obligations. He further criticized Germany’s support of Israeli actions against Iran, labeling it as contrary to international law.
