Iran Joins Vienna and Strasbourg Agreements on Intellectual Property

Tehran: Iran has acceded to the Vienna and Strasbourg Agreements on intellectual property (IP) classification, becoming a party to all international treaties in this field.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Ali Bahreini, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, met with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang on Monday to deposit Iran’s instruments of accession and ratification of the two agreements. The Iranian mission shared this development on X, noting that Bahreini and Tang emphasized the critical role of intellectual property in both national and global development, and they reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation.

The Strasbourg Agreement, adopted in 1971, established the International Patent Classification (IPC) system. This system offers a uniform approach to categorize inventions and technical information found in patent documents, facilitating easier search, comparison, and sharing of patent data among countries.

The Vienna Agreement, adopted two years later, introduced the Vienna Classification system for trademarks. This system provides a standardized method to categorize the figurative elements, such as logos and symbols, used in trademarks. It aids national and international trademark offices in organizing, searching, and comparing trademark data more effectively, thus fostering consistency and collaboration in global intellectual property management.
