Iran Judiciary Rejects European Snapback Activation as Legally Invalid

Tehran: Asghar Jahangir, spokesperson for Iran’s Judiciary, dismissed the activation of the snapback mechanism by Germany, France and Britain as lacking legal validity and described the move as a psychological and propaganda tool rather than a real threat to Iran, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday and saying that noise and psychological warfare aim to undermine public morale.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, last week Germany, France and Britain initiated the process of the snapback mechanism, a clause that would reinstate United Nations sanctions on Iran over claims of Iran’s ‘significant non-compliance’ with the 2015 nuclear agreement, which the United States unilaterally abandoned in 2018.

Jahangir said the action by the European troika has no legal validity and is aimed at creating pressure on public opinion rather than posing a direct legal threat to the country.

He said hostile efforts seek to create discontent in society and urged unity to resist pressure, calling for smart media engagement to prevent opponents from exploiting divisions.

Jahangir warned against fuelling false polarizations in society and said national cohesion must be preserved to counter attempts to manipulate public opinion.

He quoted: “The enemy is trying to create discontent in society, but experience has shown that the people of Iran stand firmly against hardships, sanctions, and aggression.”

The snapback mechanism was described in the original agreement as a step to restore sanctions in case of ‘significant non-compliance’ with the 2015 deal; the measure was invoked by the three European states last week, according to the report.
