Tehran: Iran has reiterated its commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in light of ongoing Israeli aggression. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei emphasized this stance during his weekly press briefing, stating that Lebanon, like any nation, has the inherent right to defend itself against the Israeli regime.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei addressed questions about Lebanese reactions to Iranian comments on Hezbollah’s weaponry, denying any interference in Lebanon’s internal affairs. He affirmed Iran’s support for Lebanon’s unity and independence, particularly given its proximity to an occupying entity like Israel, which frequently engages in acts of aggression. Baqaei argued that countries must be equipped with defensive capabilities to counter such threats, referencing Western pressure on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah.
Baqaei highlighted the importance of military power and weapons in asserting national rights, noting that Hezbollah’s armaments are an internal matter for Lebanon to resolve through legal channels. He also paid tribute to Iranian diplomats and reporters killed in a 1998 attack in Afghanistan, condemning recent attacks on media personnel as war crimes and violations of international law.
Baqaei criticized Israel’s plans to occupy Gaza and the West Bank, dismissing claims of liberating Gaza from Hamas as false. He underscored international condemnation of these actions, which align with efforts to displace Palestinians and erase their national identity.
On the topic of Iran’s negotiations with European countries, Baqaei clarified that talks have not stopped, as both sides recently agreed in Istanbul to continue discussions. He warned against the European troika’s use of the “snapback” mechanism, arguing it would undermine their credibility in the nuclear negotiations.
Discussing legal actions against US and Israeli aggression, Baqaei stated that Iran’s Foreign Ministry is actively pursuing documentation and legal proceedings. He reiterated Iran’s lack of trust in the US, following a joint attack by Israel and the US during negotiations, and dismissed claims of upcoming Iran-US talks in Norway.
Regarding the Zangezur Corridor, Baqaei affirmed Iran’s ongoing discussions with Armenia, with high-level consultations planned to address regional concerns. Additionally, he noted the visit of the IAEA Deputy Director General to Tehran for consultations, though he refrained from predicting outcomes.
